Stoke city skipper Ryan Shawcross believes that his side has a chance of beating the in-form United when both sides clash on Saturday.

Stoke suffered their first defeat of the campaign in the 4-0 beating at Sunderland last weekend nine games into the season which began in July due to Europa League qualification.

Having progressed through the League Cup at the expense of Tottenham on Wednesday, the Potters will be hoping to resume their triumphant run against Premier League holders Manchester United when they visit the Britannia Stadium this Saturday.

Shawcross, a former Manchester United youth player, is optimistic about bouncing back from last weekend's heavy loss and getting a result against his former club.

He told the club's official match day magazine: "It was probably a bit of a reality check for us to be honest, especially having been on a nine-game unbeaten run to start the new season.

"Good runs have to come to an end, but it was disappointing for it to end in that fashion at Sunderland. The result and the performance were disappointing, but we move on now and we set our sights on another unbeaten run like the one we have just had.

"It will be hard to start that off against Manchester United because they are a top team, but everyone is beatable, and we know if we have the fans right behind us and we perform in a way we know we can, then we do have a chance."

The 23-year-old has impressed in his performances since joining the club in 2007 on loan before gaining captaincy in 2010 and several clubs, including Tottenham and Liverpool, were rumoured to be interested in a bid for him.

Shawcross, however, insists that his future lies with is current club.

"I've always said that I wanted to play in Europe and Stoke City have given me that opportunity, so my future is undoubtedly here at the Britannia Stadium," said Shawcross.

"I really do love it here, the fans are great to me and the manager [Tony Pulis] is absolutely top class.

"He is probably the biggest factor in wanting to be here because I really enjoy working underneath him because he keeps making me a better player and has shown unbelievable faith in me.

"With the group of lads we have here too, I don't think anyone would want to leave. It's a great set-up with a very good team who are all striving to bring success to the football club."
