Ajax shot-stopper Maarten Stekelenburg could be set for a move to Roma, his agent has confirmed.

The 28-year-old has just one season left on his contract with Ajax and could now be moving to the Italian capital under new Roma boss Luis Enrique.

His agent Rob Jansen, quoted in Voetbal International, said: "The negotiations are still very difficult. The clubs are still far apart, but today we continue to negotiate in Amsterdam. Ajax has no set deadline.

"Maarten would be keen on a move to Roma, otherwise I would not be in talks with the club."

Ajax coach Frank de Boer said on Monday: "We want to clarify whether (Stekelenburg) is staying or not and whether he wants to extend his current contract. If not, then a winter transfer seems probable."

Roma recently sold Brazilian goalkeeper Doni to English side Liverpool but still have Romanian Bogdan Lobont and another Brazilian, Julio Sergio, on their squad.
